IAPTI announces its first ever intensive Spanish-language workshop. Dated to happen on the 10th and 11th of April, 2010; this event is sure to have the Spanish enthusiasts making a beeline to attend the training. The GALA conference on translation and localization is around the corner. This conference hosted by the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) will take place during the 10th-12th of May 2010 and aims at promoting communication as an indispensable component of a global business strategy.
GALA intends to bring together a community of professionals who provide content for the global marketplace. They claim to have created a program for translators and interpreters including practical information on building a global content strategy to serve local customers worldwide as well as new ideas for helping language service providers build their businesses. Sahitya Akademi awards – one of the most prestigious literature awards in India, awarded Mr J K Bargohain the award for best translation for the year 2009 for his ‘Lokayata Dearshan’, a translation from the original work in Bengali by Devi Prasad Chattopaddhay. This book was published by Publication board in Assam and is in Assamese.

The Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CGNL) along with the National Centre for Language Technology hosted the Machine Translation Marathon (MTM) 2010 in the Dublin City University from the 23rd of Jan 2010, to the 30th of the month. The MTM was on behalf of the EuroMatrixPlus Consortium, which is a Machine Translation research project. This is the fourth marathon in which a huge number of researchers, developers, students, and users of machine translation from all the over the globe attended to hear the experts on the subject matter, lecture and demonstrate them on what’s latest in the field.

The past two years have proven to be extremely profitable for the interpreters at England and Wales as the official reports show that the Ministry of Justice has spent more than a whooping amount of £20 million on the interpreters. The reports show that the interpreters cost the department £11.5million in 2008-09 and £11.8 million in 2007-08. The interpreters’ services were used in HM Courts Service (HMCS), the Tribunals Service, the National Offenders’ Management Service (NOMS), and in the department’s headquarters. The services were required to interpret the victim’s statements in the courts while those of the suspects are paid for by the Home Office via the police.

The French Institute is calling out to all the translators based out of UK to take part and bag the French Institute Translation Prize 2010. This prize is aimed at discovering the hidden talent in the field, promote translation as a career, and to portray the challenges and excitement in the profession of translation. This is also a sure way to encourage the budding translators to consider their passion seriously and at the same time give them a platform to prove themselves. The institute has invited all unpublished translators based out of UK to participate in the contest.
This is the second year that the institute is hosting this contest. The contest requires the contestants to translate two extracts from contemporary French novels to English. The pieces are Black Bazar by Alain Mabanckou (Editions du Seuil, 2009), and Un Homme louche by François Beaune (Editions Verticales, 2009. Read more of this article »

Good leadership not only involves in getting the tasks completed, but also in getting the best out of your team members. It amounts to a whole lot of output than you can ever imagine. It’s only a good captain who can ensure that his ship remains afloat during a bad storm, and with the economic downtime around us, what each organization and team needs is good captains. What then makes one a good leader? Is it the authority? The power? The experience? Or the exposure? A good leader has a lot more about him/her than just these basics. Do you think you are a good leader and all you need is the right organization and team to create wonders? Then be sure to have the following characteristics, because that is what the organizations look for in their leaders.
