French Translation Contest!

The French Institute is calling out to all the translators based out of UK to take part and bag the French Institute Translation Prize 2010. This prize is aimed at discovering the hidden talent in the field, promote translation as a career, and to portray the challenges and excitement in the profession of translation. This is also a sure way to encourage the budding translators to consider their passion seriously and at the same time give them a platform to prove themselves. The institute has invited all unpublished translators based out of UK to participate in the contest.

This is the second year that the institute is hosting this contest. The contest requires the contestants to translate two extracts from contemporary French novels to English. The pieces are Black Bazar by Alain Mabanckou (Editions du Seuil, 2009), and Un Homme louche by François Beaune (Editions Verticales, 2009. The Institute has been sending out the text to be translated to the various University language departments since January and the interested participants can obtain the text from their tutors. Apart from this, the text is also available at: www.frenchbooknews.com and can be picked from there.

The winning text will be judged based on its proximity to the original text in terms of the literature and the essence of the text. The judges include renowned translators Adriana Hunter and Will Hobson, and former Publishing Director of Chatto & Windus, Alison Samuel. The first prize is a weekend in Paris along with the winning text being published on www.frenchbooknews.com , while the second prize comprises of a year’s worth free membership to the French institute, and the third prize a selection of French books.
