One World, One Doc: The New Google Docs

Last week, Google released a completely re-vamped version of Google Docs, reported Mashable.com. The relaunch did not alter the original intention of Google Docs, which is to allow users to create, edit, and share documents online without an endless stream of emailed versions. With this new incarnation, there is just a whole lot more sharing. Now, up to fifty people can edit a single document, or draw a single picture, or add to a single spreadsheet. All collaborators can see, character by character, changes being made by other users. Collaboration is made even easier by the new Mircosoft Word-esque layout, an increase in user-friendliness that Google hopes will correspond with an increase in users. This new version of Google Docs provides an incredible advantage for the translation industry in that no matter a user’s location, documents, spreadsheets, and images can be edited in real time across the globe. Editors and translators can work together to create the best possible document without being in the same room, or even on the same continent, vastly reducing the time needed to create an accurate and clean translation. Google is known as the most innovative company on the market place today. They improved online search on the NET, they created their own internet browser, they host one of the most powerful free language translators on the web (on the moment of this article, supporting 54 languages) and now they have introduced a new tool that is going to revolutionize the language translation industry in particular and the world in general. Just two months into 2010 and we are flooded with translation events, online courses, and workshops worldwide. While some of the events have been language specific, there are those that have been on the various techniques of translation to help the professionals keep up with the evolving technology. And these have not necessarily been on a few selected languages. 2010 has seen the waking of various languages ranging from Arabic, to Indian languages. This has brought in a whole lot translation competitions organized by various well-known universities, all more than willing to encourage the young translators into starting a new career.

With translation going the big way, it is no surprise to see the kind of response the various events and award sessions seem to receive. The responses have been great and the interest shown in the profession, note-worthy. That’s not all. The software, literature, and other documentation have been introduced to a whole new world of a variety of languages and are no more restricted to a few standard languages. The same goes with the translation tools that have also updated themselves to cater to the new and wide spread market demand of these languages. This includes the big names and the small ones.

Translation – Now Big in India

With translation doing waves globally with annual revenue of $15 billion, it’s now the turn of India to take the translation industry seriously. Though still in its infancy, it is believed that translation in India has the potential to generate about 500,000 jobs! With the IT boom still large in India, it is only natural that the translation industry has turned big here.

The major translation currently is software documentation being translated to various Indian and foreign languages including the German, Japanese, and French languages. This has also led to a range of specialized language training courses for various languages. Though a study/research on the languages that would be in demand in the region is yet to be done, so far professionals specialized in Indian languages, English, German, French, and Japanese are said to be doing well. With the industry filled with so much of potential, there are very few professional translators to tap this market and make the most of it. The opportunities being big, the interest in translation seems to be growing as more and more youngsters are keen to try it out.

With nations like India filled with various languages and cultures, translation becomes a necessity for the software/product to reach people across the nation. And thus opening up various opportunities for translators and interpreters to work their magic and make gold.

MOLTO- The Translation Tool

Another day dawns with yet another translation tool all set to translate at its best bagging a funding of 2 million EURO. The MOLTO project, coordinated by University of Gothenburg, Sweden, received the funding from the EU to develop a translation tool that covers most of the EU languages. It has been reported that all the citizens of Europe will now have the same access to the information on the internet.

This initiative, targets at creating a tool that will suit different areas of applications including translation of patent descriptions. This is supposed to provide the people across the globe with the complete advantage of the new technology without having to gain proficiency in the language used to write the patent description. The project also aims at accurate translation for mathematical terminologies and descriptions of cultural heritages and museum objects. So far it has been impossible to create a tool that covers all the languages, according to reports. MOLTO intends to go about this by primarily working on the precision of grammar and then look to cover as many languages as possible. This is in contrast to other tools, which cover as many languages as possible with the basics in place and then based on feedback/suggestions, work towards making the tool more accurate.

MOLTO aims at being the go-to tool for all information with this system. MOLTO aims at an accurate translation which will be helpful for people into writing and documentation. With the precision in place, the tool is currently being updated with the addition of languages. Hopefully, not a long wait to have a hands-on experience of the tool.

Toshiba presents another of its brainwave- a cell phone with instant voice translation!! Yet another revolutionary development in the world of technology and translation. An extremely handy feature for those blessed souls who get to travel across the globe- here is a cool new gizmo that helps you understand the basic sentences of a few of the countries that you travel to. The cell phone apparently, is equipped with a translation software that in its current iteration, enables phone to interpret between English, Chinese and Japanese. The company claims that the phone database contains up to 30,000 words in each of these languages. This was done by optimizing the existing PC software which has resulted in lesser processing power. Titled as TG01 “smartphone”, it’s a handy gizmo to get hold of.

Easy to use, this phone requires the user to speak into the phone in any of the three languages. The handset analyses what is said and translates it sentence-wise and repeats it loud in the desired language, without missing out on the tone modulations of the native speaker. The best part though is that it does not require the users to be online, thus helping those on travel.

With the promises of coming up with a practical version of the software within this year, the company claims that the current software handles 70% of the travel-related conversations. The target group for this product is the business crowd/tourists who like to travel. The phone definitely seems to be of a great help to the target group.

Today, we are excited to announce a beta release of a new and improved version of online Translator Database developed by Translation Services USA!

Due to the strong growth during 2008-2009, we had constant shortages of qualified translators for some of the rare languages like Karen, Afrikaans, Dari and others. It was difficult to rely on third party websites such as proz.com or translatorscafe.com because they impose fees and create some operational hurdles. These websites supplied translators with very poor language and software skills which made reliance on them challenging and full of negative surprises.

So, we decided to address these issues and build the first world’s truly comprehensive translator database which will be used exclusively by Translation Services USA while in Beta version, and then, we will make it available through API for other translation agencies and companies. Think of this system as a social security platform that is brought to translation business. All translators will have only one unique ID that is assigned to them through a complex algorithm. This will ensure that all the records for that individual are maintained consistently and if ever he or she screws up the employer, there will be a permanent record on file. All future employers will be aware of these “bad apples” and won’t ever assign another job to him or her. This is how it will work.

We live in the 2010, the world full of technological advances and break-throughs.
