Syria Flag Description:

Three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white, and black, colors associated with the Arab Liberation flag; two small green five-pointed stars in a horizontal line centered in the white band; former flag of the United Arab Republic where the two stars represented the constituent states of Syria and Egypt; similar to the flag of Yemen, which has a plain white band, Iraq, which has three green stars (plus an Arabic inscription) in a horizontal line centered in the white band, and that of Egypt, which has a gold Eagle of Saladin centered in the white band; the current design dates to 1980.

Syria Flag Information:

The Syria Flag was officially adopted on May 29, 1980.

Syria's flag is inspired by the French Tricolor. It has the Pan-Arab colors of green, red, white and black. The two stars adjusted depending on the point-of-view - either represent Syria and Egypt, or Syria and Iraq. It is also the flag of Former United Arab Republic.

The current flag of Jordan with the green and white colors reversed is the former flag used by the Syrians, in 1920. The colors and design were adopted from the Pan-Arab flag. The stars depicts for the fact that Syria was the first country to use the Pan-Arab colors. The French changed the flag of Syria under their authorization into a blue flag with a white circle in the center and a French flag in the quarter. The flag also underwent changes into a horizontally striped green-white-black tricolor flag with three red five-pointed stars in the center of the white stripe. The first national flag of Syria after independence in 1944 was designed in green-white-black flag with three red stars.

Further in 1958, Syria and Egypt merged to form the United Arab Republic. Thus the red-white-black design was adopted with two green stars which turned out to be Syria's current flag. When Syria split with UAR in 1961 it reverted to its old green-white-black flag as a national declaration.

The colors of the flag are traditionally significant with Pan-Arab colors, also used on the flags of Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, and Iraq. The two stars represent Egypt and Syria which are the two participating nations in the United Arab Republic. The varied colors depict the dynasties that ruled, green for the Rashidun or Fatimid, white for the Umayyads, black the color of Abbasids and red for the blood of martyrs.

Syria flag depicts the constituency of the nation as well as its culture and heritage.
