The term Ottawa language is used to refer to a dialect of the Ojibwe language spoken in a series of communities in southern Ontario and a smaller number of communities in northern Michigan. Although the descendants of migrant Ottawa speakers live in Kansas and Oklahoma the status of the language there is unknown. Ojibwe is a member of the Algonquian language family, itself a member of the Algic language family. Ottawa has undergone a number of linguistic innovations which significantly differentiate it from other dialects of Ojibwa. Ottawa is sometimes considered a separate language for social or political reasons but by conventional linguistic criteria is a mutually intelligible dialect of the larger Ojibwa language complex.
Ottawa and the neighbouring Eastern Ojibwa dialect of Ojibwe are characterized by a high degree of vowel syncope, which deletes short vowels in certain metrically defined positions in a word, although the two dialects are distinguished by other criteria. This article treats only Ottawa.
Ottawa is generally known in the language as Nishnaabemwin, although this term is also applied to the closely related Eastern Ojibwe communities of Rama and Curve Lake. This term corresponds to Anishinaabemowin in a number of other Ojibwa dialects. The term Daawaamwin (syncoped form of noun Odaawaa "Ottawa," verb suffix –mo ‘speak a language,’ suffix –win ‘nominalizer’) "Ottawa language" is also cited in some sources.
