Certified Driver's License Translation

$24.95per page (up to 250 words), certificate of accuracy included

We translate foreign driver's licenses into English and certify them for $24.95. Both sides of the card fit on one page, so that is usually the whole price. The translation keeps the layout of the card and comes with a signed certificate of accuracy that DMVs, insurers and courts can rely on. Most orders arrive as a PDF within 24 hours.

What we translate

What we translate on a driver's license

Everything printed on both sides of the card: the holder's name, date and place of birth, address if shown, license number, issue and expiry dates, the issuing authority, and the table of vehicle categories with their own dates. Restriction codes, such as a requirement to wear glasses or to drive automatic cars only, are translated with their meaning rather than left as bare numbers.

European licenses share the same category letters (AM, A, B, C, D and so on), but the dates and codes behind them differ by country. Licenses from Latin America, Asia and the Middle East follow their own systems. We translate the categories as printed and add a short note when a US clerk would not recognize them.

Older paper licenses and booklets are translated page by page. A phone photo of each side is enough to get started.

Who asks for it

Who asks for a translated driver's license

DMVs are the main reason, and each state sets its own rules for new residents with a foreign license. Some states have agreements that let holders of licenses from certain countries, such as Germany, South Korea or Taiwan, exchange them for a state license without a road test. Others count a foreign license as proof of driving experience. Either way, the DMV usually wants an English translation if the card isn't in English.

Car insurers ask for the translation so they can credit your driving history instead of pricing you as a new driver. Rental companies, traffic courts dealing with a ticket, and employers checking a candidate's driving record from abroad ask for it too.

Requirements

Translation or International Driving Permit?

They are different documents. An International Driving Permit is a booklet that translates your license into several languages. Only the country that issued your license can issue it, and you have to get it before you travel. Visitors driving in the US for a short time often carry one alongside their license.

A certified translation is for people who live here or deal with a US office: exchanging a license at the DMV, proving driving history to an insurer, or showing a court what a license allowed. New residents usually have to get a state license within a set number of days, and an IDP does not replace that.

State rules change, so check your DMV's page for foreign licenses before you go. If the DMV wants the translation notarized, our notary adds it for $25 the same day. For USCIS filings no notary is needed under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3).

FAQ

Questions about this translation

Do I need a certified translation or an International Driving Permit?

If you are visiting, an International Driving Permit from your home country is usually what you need. If you are moving here and dealing with a DMV, an insurer or a court, you need a certified translation. We can't issue an IDP; only the country that issued your license can.

Do you translate both sides of the card?

Yes, both sides are included in the one-page price. Send a clear photo of each side.

Will my DMV accept your translation?

Most DMVs that ask for a translation accept one from a professional translation company, and ours carries a signed certificate of accuracy. A few keep their own list of approved translators or want a translation from your consulate, so check your state's page for foreign licenses first.

Does the translation need to be notarized?

Only if the office asks for it, and most don't. If yours does, we notarize the translation for $25 the same day.

How fast can I get it?

Most licenses are delivered as a certified PDF within 24 hours. If your DMV appointment is tomorrow, same-day rush is $14.95 extra.
