What we translate
A death certificate records the person's name, date and place of birth and death, and marital status. Many also list the spouse and parents, the informant who reported the death, and the registrar who recorded it. A lot of countries add the cause of death, written by a doctor in medical language. We translate all of it, including stamps, seals and registry numbers.
Cause-of-death entries are translated by meaning, not word for word. "Insuficiencia cardiaca" becomes "heart failure", for example, and abbreviations are written out when the meaning is clear. When a doctor's handwriting can't be read with confidence, the translation says so instead of guessing.
Some countries issue a short extract without the cause of death and a full copy with it. Tell us which one the receiving office wants. Life insurers often ask for the version that shows the cause.
Who asks for it
USCIS asks for a death certificate in two kinds of cases. The first is proof that an earlier marriage ended: if you or your spouse were married before and the former spouse died, the death certificate goes with the I-130 and I-485 the way a divorce decree would. The second is a petition from a widow or widower on Form I-360, or a request to continue a case after the petitioner has died.
Outside immigration, probate and surrogate's courts need it to open an estate. Banks need it to release accounts, life insurers and pension funds need it to pay a claim, and the Social Security Administration needs it for survivor benefits. Families sending remains home or settling property abroad may need the translation going the other way, from English into the language of that country, often with an apostille.
Price & turnaround
A death certificate is nearly always one page, so the usual total is $24.95. If the office also wants an attached medical report or burial permit translated, each extra page is another $24.95.

How it works
Upload a scan or a phone photo of every page, including the back if anything is written or stamped there. We don't need the original.
Your account manager checks the page count and sends the total, usually within 15 minutes during office hours. You pay by card or PayPal.
Most documents of one to three pages arrive within 24 hours, with the signed certificate of accuracy attached. Notarized hard copies can be picked up or mailed.
Requirements
For USCIS, the signed certificate of accuracy is enough. No notary seal is needed under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3). Courts handling an estate are less uniform. Some surrogate's courts and foreign consulates ask for a notarized translation, and the notary in our 55 Broadway office can notarize it the same day for $25.
If a US death certificate has to be used abroad, say to settle an inheritance in Italy or close a bank account in Colombia, the destination country usually wants an apostille on the certificate and a translation into its own language. We arrange both. For a New York document, an apostille costs from $150 including the state fee and takes 5 to 10 business days.
Ask the court clerk or the consulate what they need before you order. It takes one phone call and saves paying twice.

It is translated accurately into standard English medical terms, so a US doctor, insurer or court reads it the way the original doctor meant it. If an entry can't be read, the translation says so.
Courts accept certified translations like ours all the time. Some also want the translator's signature notarized, which we do for $25 the same day. Check the court's rules or ask the clerk before you file.
